Bronco Billy The Musical – Charing Cross Theatre, London

Bronco Billy the Musical promised a rootin’ tootin’ Western experience, but it cleverly transported us to the 70s, where cowboys were fading relics. Dennis Hackin’s book, combined with the music and lyrics of Chip Rosenbloom and John Torres, filled the production with an unmistakable American flavour. The clash between the cowboy era and the disco-infused ’70s provided delightful comic moments, adding a layer of humour and nostalgia.

The show kicked off with a gunshot, skillfully created by John Bulleid, Sound Designer, whose expertise allowed the ricocheting bullet to bounce around the audience, capturing my immediate attention. It was a small detail, but a masterfully executed one.

Victoria Hamilton-Barritt’s portrayal of the wicked stepmother, Constance Lily, was nothing short of incredible. Her performance had the audience in stitches, supported by equally noteworthy henchmen. Alexander McMorran as Sinclair St. Clair, embodied a flamboyant and over-the-top comic villain, enhanced by John Bulleid’s illusions. Silas Wyatt-Barke in the role of John Arlington, added a touch of hilarity with a posh accent and dance moves.

Tarrin Callender as Bronco Billy showcased impressive talent, delivering a rich vocal performance. However, there were moments when it seemed he was pushed to hit even lower notes. Emily Benjamin, playing Antoinette Lily, displayed fantastic talent.

The first act crescendoed with a big ensemble number, a moment that seemed primed for an interval. Instead, it extended for an additional half hour, making the second act much shorter. Despite the well rehearsed and numerous illusions, the occasional slip-ups and prop mishaps added a touch of spontaneity that somehow complemented the production’s style.

In conclusion, “Bronco Billy the Musical” successfully blended the charm of the Wild West with the disco vibes of the ’70s, creating a unique and engaging experience. The talented cast, punctuated by standout performances contributed to the overall enjoyment, even with the occasional hiccup adding an unexpected charm to the show.
