Othello – Lyric Hammersmith

Othello – Lyric Hammersmith
Frantic Assembly’s production of ‘Othello’ is a dynamic and engaging take on the classic play. The set, a lounge area of a bar, is well utilised including clever exit to the toilet. The rear wall is used in an inventive way to convey the characters’ inner turmoil and helps highlight drunken moments. Frantic Assembly breathed life into Othello, in the same way Baz Luhmann did for Romeo and Juliet.
Michael Akinsulire’s portrayal of Othello is particularly strong and evocative. Under the direction of Scott Graham, he works seamlessly through a range of emotions; agitated, helplessness and rage, allowing the audience to appreciate the play as they have never done before.
The use of physical theatre is flawlessly woven into the story and the choreography is creative. Highlights include what would traditionally be Act II, scene iii where Cassio, played by Tom Gill is on guard. The production takes liberties with the script, it is set in London, which adds a contemporary feel and will appeal to today’s youth. The play presents the strength and rage of London without forcing or adding clichés such as knife crime. There is enough innuendo to make it exciting for school groups, while keeping it appropriate.
After the interval, the production plays up many moments in a comedic way that is not often seen before in other productions of ‘Othello’. This is then juxtaposed with the brutal, gory and violent finale, adding depth and complexity to the play. The overall effect is a modern and highly entertaining interpretation of Shakespeare’s play making it a modern classic that is not to be missed.
