Heathers the Musical

This was my first visit to @Sohoplace, and I found it to be a lovely theatre. It appears to be highly versatile, able to accommodate various stage configurations. For Heathers, the stage was set up in a thrust format with the audience on three sides, which made for a very intimate experience even in a large venue.

If you’re a returning fan of Heathers, you won’t be disappointed. This production stays true to the version I saw a few years ago. The casting is superb, with many of the actors having worked on different versions of the show before, and thirteen making their West End debut, though you wouldn’t know it from their performances.

For those unfamiliar with the show, Heathers, with music, book, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, it has become a cult classic. Many audience members even dress up as their favourite characters. Costume Supervisor Robin Lill has done an excellent job of meeting fan expectations.

This show appeals to both older and younger audiences, though there are a few scenes that might shock the easily offended or younger. Andy Fickman, the director, has done an incredible job bringing this show to life, tackling topics like bullying, homophobia, and murder with a unique blend of humour and sensitivity.

If you’re looking for an American high school experience complete with jocks, geeks, and popular girls, this is the show for you. Despite never having attended an American high school myself, this production felt just like the movies have made me believe it would be.

The physical comedy in this production is outstanding, with excellent timing throughout. The use of slow motion is particularly incredible and adds a unique touch to the performance. If you were ever in doubt about whether it would work, this show will make you a believer. The comedic elements are perfectly timed, enhancing the overall experience and keeping the audience engaged and entertained.

Keelan McAuley as JD and Jenna Innes as Veronica Sawyer are a fantastic pairing. McAuley captures JD’s emotional vulnerability and complexity perfectly. The three Heathers—Esme Bowdler, Sedona Sky, and Daisy Twells as Chandler, Duke, and McNamara, respectively—each bring their own unique personalities to the roles and work seamlessly together.
Gary Lloyd, as Choreographer and Associate Director, maximises the impact of this for the iconic dance numbers like “Candy Store” and “Big Fun.”

This is clearly a five-star show, but with a warning: I recommend booking seats at the front. The thrust stage configuration limits the view for those seated to the sides, and both choreography and direction are best appreciated from the front. Treat the thrust stage like a large apron stage for the best experience.

Overall, Heathers the Musical at @Sohoplace is a brilliant production that shouldn’t be missed.
