Killing the Cat -Riverside Studios, London

“Killing the Cat,” a newly debuted musical production held at Riverside Studios is a noteworthy addition to the theatrical scene. The venue itself is spacious, with its welcoming foyer complete with a café, displays, and BBC memorabilia that render it an all-encompassing space suitable for individuals of all ages. The performance space for this production, despite being wider than deep, was efficiently used with all white steps, arches, and floor tiles, all cleverly arranged to create an optimal viewing experience for the audience.
Warner Brown’s book and lyrics, stylistically reminiscent of Sondheim, contains more than a few expletives, which, in my opinion, could have been better moderated. The three-piece band are visible on stage throughout the show and deliver an impeccable performance. The cast, equally talented is impressive, albeit with a disproportional amount of the of songs given to the female versus the male characters.
Following the interval, Jamie Platt’s lighting design takes on a more pronounced role, with subtle yet stunning changes in colour and shadows, breathing life into the steps and arches on the white set.
While the title of the production, “Killing the Cat,” might suggest a theme of curiosity, the play instead presents a conflict between faith and science. This theme, as a metaphor, could be applied to any scenario where disagreement arises. The second half of the performance, however, lacks significant plot development, with the argument appearing to go around in circles, and no side emerging as the clear winner.
Overall, “Killing the Cat” features an exceptionally talented cast, making it a performance worth watching, with the narrative taking a backseat to the showcase of the performers’ prowess.
